Photogrammetry for 3d printing /first attempts

Hello Community,

Below is my first photogrammetry project after a lot of reading and searching through the internet ,
i went to the national garden of Athens ,found a statue that i liked and made my first serious attempt to 3d scan it.
the results are really promising ..
I want to continue learning ,so i can explore the possibility of using photogrammetry
to create high res 3d scans suitable for 3d printing..

Wow Andreas! The pic of stl looks very good and appears to compare well with pics of statue.

Robert the equipment used is a normal NIKON DSLR camera shooting jpgs which was handheld!!
nothing special there..

do you think i can get the same results on something smaller like 12inch with a cannon d80.

the only way to find out is to give it a try..
i think that if you know how to shoot then you will get really good results..

Are u taking the photos then uploading to a service that does the stl composite, or using your own software.

Robert so far i am testing Adobe Remake which allows you to upload images to their server for all the computing
and PhotoScan from agisoft which is the most professional software but requires a really powerful pc to work with..

Below is some info regarding the results from my first attempt to create a high res 3d scan suitable for 3d printing.


50 photos were used in array.
7mb each,jpeg format







Final STL file ,you can see there in no info at the back ,cause i was not able to take photos due to a big tree.
so no photos ,no info


Final thoughts..
i am simply in love !!!

The potential of this technique if used correctly can definitely give high res scans of objects suitable for 3d printing..

Is there any info on how the process works with smaller objects, like jewelry or other items?

Robert the principle its the same ..
no matter if it is a ring ,a statue or a car...
it works with all kind of objects except glass or really shiny surfaces..

Do you think this technique could scan gems and make an stl file?

I don't want to pay $20k for a small jewelry scanner...

photogrammetry can not scan through "glassy" or really shiny objects

Might be able to "talc" the gems for the process.

yes..this could be a solution..
or prime them maybe with some easy to remove primer ?
