v1.8.0 Released - 04/28/2015

Download here: http://www.b9c.com/software/

Release Notes:

The new version of B9Creator features many changes and improvements to the printing process.
Change log: http://www.b9c.com/softwaredelta/

Because of these changes, it is necessary to download and install the new version manually as older versions cannot automatically update.

We expect all users to upgrade to the new version, as we can only offer support for the latest version. In addition, older versions will not work with our new “all in one” printed circuit board that will begin shipping on all new machines shortly. (v1.8.0 will work with both the older Arduino + PCB and the new “all in one” PCB).

However, if you wish to “try out” the new software, but require the ability to go back to the older version at some point, you will need to save some older version information before installing the new version. Specifically:
- Open Settings->Printer settings and write down all the values listed. These settings are stored in your printer and the new version of the software may change them. If you do not record them, they may be lost, making it difficult to restore to the older version when desired.
- Open the materials catalog and export your custom material settings (if you have any). The new version of the software will delete any custom materials you have added to the catalog and if you go back to the old version, you will need to import them if you wish to use them.
- A link to the older v1.7.3 version remains available, if you choose to revert back.

Documentation:
The new software has some built in context sensitive help for all functions/fields. Additionally, we have filmed several hours of "how to" videos for setup, calibrations, vat coating, ets. These should be edited and released within 2 weeks. For now, we provide a temporary transcript of the videos: http://www.b9c.com/videotranscript/

Rough draft of the "how to" videos here: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=2674&p=28317#p28317

Getting started with v1.8.0

- There will be a require firmware update (to version 213).
- After installing be sure to go to Setting->Printer Settings and load factory defaults then save values.
- When printing, use all default settings
- For the first print you do, print a calibration pattern.

The calibration pattern job files are installed in Documents/B9Creator/Calibrations. You will find two folders, v1_1 and v1_2. If you are using the new v1.2 HD B9Creator, use the files found in the v1_2 directory.

There are many included pre-sliced files, read the name and choose one that matches your desired XY and Z resolution.

Print it with your favorite material using default settings.

Analyze the printed calibration pattern and use it to fine tune your projector's Fade, Balance, MSM and Slope to get perfect prints.

To analyze Balance, compare left features (B-) vs right side features (B+). If the left side is weak, try shifting the balance to the left (say from 0 to -0.1), if the right side is weak, try shifting the balance to the right (say from 0 to 0.1)
Do similar for Fade.

Once the balance is correct, check the the diameter of the center group of pegs, they should be 2 mm. If they are too small, try increasing the MSM from 1.0 to 1.1. If they are too large, try decreasing the MSM slightly. Note that is is CRITICAL to first do a good optical projector calibration, ensuring that the projected grid pattern matches the printed grid pattern and that you've verified the accuracy of your printed grid pattern.

Finally, check the diameter of the pegs on the outer corners and compare them to the diameter of the center pegs, if the outer pegs are smaller, try increasing the Slope a bit, say from 1.0 to 1.1, if they are larger then try turning down the Slope from 1.0 to 0.9, etc.

The calibration prints are short and print fairly quickly. Taking the time to print them and adjust your Printer Settings accordingly will give you the best quality output.

Just like to say that everyone should go ahead and run the new 1.8.0 software. Easy to use and the new calibration files print quickly and make tweeking your individual projector very easy too. Been running beta and love it, and i'm no 'puter person.

Don't worry if it takes a little longer for the attach layers to start their exposures. Mike has built in longer pre exposure (settle times) on the first few layers to aid in squeezing the resin between the build table and the PDMS surface. This should aid in attachment. MIke's explanation not mine. I initially thought something was wrong and the process wasn't going to start after I clicked "Create" (beging print). Just wait and your print will begin.

We're currently building on and supporting OS X v10.10 Yosemite. Not sure why it's no longer working on the older OS version. Will have to research that.

The V1.8 is way more advanced than V1.7, and 1.7 wasn't bad. V1.8 is just smarter as an update should be. I like that the prints hit PDMS in different locations. That makes the prints faster,, maybe 20%? with less wear on the PDMS layer.

Very impressed and happy with 1.8.

I should note, if you check "Dynamic Vat Positioning" (not on by default), then that will save the pdms, BUT... because of variations in the pdms (changing the refractive index), the print quality might suffer. So it's great when you're printing "rough drafts" (ie, slicing thick for faster prints), but you might want to leave it off when optimal print quality is required.

This is not to be confused with the new minimal release technique. After the table has reached a height of 2mm (so as to no longer be a factor in release) we only slide to the right (release) far enough to for the just printed layer to clear the waterfall, then we raise. This is the normal operation for release and can not be turned off. Note that every 16th cycle we do a full release just to ensure the pdms is swept completely and to reset the slide's home position in case there's any encoder error building up.

Both of these cycles will reduce print time.

The v1.8.0 materials catalog now includes: 1:1 Red Cherry mix and B9R-2-BLACK

Note the new allowable slice thicknesses too:

B9R-1-Cherry: 25.0 - 51.0 microns Z

RedCherry 1:1 Mix: 30.0 - 70.0 microns Z

B9R-1-Red: 70.0 - 204.0 microns Z

B9R-2-Black: 30.0 - 204.0 microns Z

It's called "RedCherry 1:1 Mix"

None of the old material settings will work with the new software.

my bad, I read it as a option for 70xy 30z, is this setting a duplicate of the previous setting?
I loaded the last print that I have done, and it seems like the print time is a bit higher.

As long as you've laid out and sliced your job appropriately, you can print with the 1:1 at any XY and at slice thickness (Z) of 30-70 microns.

Robert H to answer the other part of your question, just select the red cherry 1:1 mix and use default settings the only thing i have changed is settle when i had a great deal of supports. With the new SW i would not load settings from previous print. Maybe after u are using the 1.8 for a print.

Good job Mike! Did my first print with the new software RedCherry 1:1 30xy and loved it. Dynamic vat turned off. Faster actual print times, more quiet operation, smart vat movements that help with adhesion also.
