Re: First print using FEP and custom made build table

I'm also trying FEP, at 30xy with emerald resin.

I also have problems with the prints sticking to the FEP. I've tried smearing some oil on the FEP, and it helps, but during a print longer than a calibration, the oil wears off and the prints start sticking.

I suspect there are settings we can change. But I'm not educated on how to adjust them, not even what each of them mean.

I just don't want to trial and error this, but instead go to the science...

your first two layers will always struggle..
after that it should run smoothly

in my case all these problems were related due to bad build table calibration..
Dont forget that you are trying to calibrate the build table on a 0,5mm thin piece of film
rather than a thick piece of pdms ,which is really forgiving..
you have to adjust your build table EXTREMELY carefully..

Andreas,

The first thing I did was sand the build table flat using 120 grit sandpaper.

Note how early sanding shows the build table had high and low spots.

But after a lot of sanding, the table approaches flat.

I didn't take a pic of the table when I finished sanding. It's pretty clear of any red paint.

my friend you need to understand that FEP is extremely sensitive and WILL reveal every small imperfection you might have in your hardware parts or misalignment between them ..
So if you want to use FEP coating ,you need to be absolutely sure that everything is perfect..
Also you ned to adjust both MSM settings and it would be good also to create a different resin profile ..

The have a solution to first clean then another positioning solution.

Here is the tray after I applied the film. I am not 100% sure I applied it correctly there seems to be spots that are dull but not air maybe still damp? Not sure.

I re-calibrated the table and projector... nothing else.

The black part is really old done on PDMS the red is the first try on the FEP film. Looks Really good to me.

Did you have to change the cure times?

Hi Lobby,
When you tighten the screws holding the platform to the Black holder is another potential problem . The screws can cause the table to miss-align.
Better to check the flatness of the table right after calibrating the build platform. Remove it from the Machine with the Black holder still attached and now put it on a piece of glass... if there is any rocking, the platform is still not flat.If there is no rocking, then that is good.
FEP works best at 30XY
at 50XY , it is difficult to tune and get consistent results.

1st thing to do is reduce your msm by about 1/2 of what you are using with FEP.
My machines are working at .5 msm on one and .7 on the other.
Print a calibration when you are positive your table is dead flat.

I've had some pressing commercial runs to make and have been using pdms to get through this stage. All is working fine with PDMS.

With FEP, the prints stick extremely well to the build table, telling me that table alignment isn't an issue. Unfortunately, the prints want to stick too much to the FEP.

I "sense" these aren't physical problems, but chemistry. The settings for FEP need to be drastically different than for PDMS.

Having a chemistry background, I've never particularly liked doing Edisonian research ("let's try this" without any idea why this would work). I don't know enough about the materials catalog settings, or about the printer settings to feel like goofing around with one experiment after another.

I suspect all this science is extremely well understood by many at B9.

I reduced my MSM from 1.0 (PDMS), to 0.6 (FEP). Perhaps reducing the msm even further would be a good direction to take. Maybe in March.

hi! guys
I am trying to get some FEP, unfortunately i cant find atm. I have question regarding FEP, there is a 2mill and 5 mill, which one should be best to uuse? i found this company that has adhesive back 2mill and 5mill. I am contacting them whether they will sell and ship internationally.

From what I have been told by metalcaster the 5mil is much easier to work with.

I Have a bunch that I had produced specifically for the metal vats. Contact me after the weekend off line at sales@racecarjewelry.com if interested.
This requires a Glass bottom for the re-usability. The aluminum trays work well for FEP. The Orange trays have acrylic bottoms. if you use FEP on it and try to remove the FEP, it will definitely damage the acrylic. The glue is extremely tough.

Also, your stock settings will need lots of tweaking.

How does the FEP compare as far as recoating is concerned? does it wear out as quickly as the PDMS? it seems much easier to replace, peel & stick vs. pour and bake.
