Converting drawings to vector files

Wish we had a place to post general questions not related to the B9 just so users can get help in other areas. Like on the Matrix forum wie have "Questions- Including Wacky Stuff". There is a wealth of info out there in the B9 community.

Like this for instance. My daughter uses a "Cricket" to do crafts. She could use her own drawings to cut out things if she could convert to vector files. Any cheap or free software out there to convert to vector files.

Just asking, I promised her I would look.

Inkscape's free on Windows and OSX, but haven't specifically tried their bitmap-to-vector feature.

I've used inkscape to import vector files into rhino. I've found that i have to play with the settings in order to get the filesize down.

It makes a ton of geometry

Btw. Any veterans out there? Solidworks offers veterans student editions for 20 dollars!

i use solidworks for vector files now

Possibly Photoshop or Graphic Convertor or Illustrator can do these conversions. They might have limited free downloads that would suit the need. Possibly even simpler software can do it. Maybe there are some artists on this forum who know about various exporting and conversion possibilities.
