Z axis Linear Bearing Upgrade

This is not an official upgrade....I replaced the 4 linear sleeves in the Z axis assembly with 2 double long linear bearings. http://www.vxb.com/page/bearings/PROD/LM/Kit8075 It has been about 4 weeks and 35+ prints, I am having great results. I have no Z axis banding. I still have some stepping, but that is normal. My models have little or no Z axis compression. The installation was fairly easy.
1. remove the 4 screws holing in the guide rod collars. ( on the back)
2. lay the B9 down on it's back.
3. gently push the rods up so there is some room to slide the linear slides out.
4. loosen the bolts holding the linear sleeve clamps and push them out and down the rods.
5. remove the 4 linear sleeves.
6. slide the new linear bearing on the rods, and into place. ( make sure they are the same on each side, I just lined them up with the top)
7. tighten the bolts. ( on the sleeve clamps)
8. slide the rods back in place.
9. put the b9 back on it's feet.
10. replace and tighten the screws on the back.

I clean the rods with alcohol and a paper towel every now and then, and lightly oil with 3-1 oil.

I noticed it doesn't really matter any more if one or all the screws on the Z axis clamps are tightened the same.

Hope this helps!

I don't know, maybe. I don't want to mess with a good thing. It's running so smooth right now.

great solution Justin, I can see how it will improve z banding, but sorry to ask this what is stepping, how does it look like?

I'm not sure what it's called.. it's how the layers stack on top of each other and will cause some lines in the model.

Basically the "stacking" lines are from the digitization of the model. Think of them like lego blocks. We are building the model from tiny blocks, so there's a limit to how smooth the surface is.

Yes, basically what we called 'staircasing' in the times the computer monitors weren't as hires as they are now (and we only had one colour).
A slanted line is build up out of tiny square blocks, like a stair case, or the LEGO blocks that Mike refers to, thats the 'staircasing' effect.

Oh man my first monitor was monochrome!! I wasn't sure what to call it in reference to 3d models.

Wouldn't it be solved by higher triangle count?

No matter the polygons u still have to slice. If u slice anything horizontally u still get stacking and therefore stepping. Only way to not see it would be to slice so thin that the resolution was smaller than the human eye could detect.

I think I heard that on the Envisiontec machines, they do some sort of 'feathering' of the 'voxels' and that reduces a lot of the grow lines you see...the samples I've seen of their models seem to be some of the smoothest I've ever seen...anyone know anything more about this???

Doesn't really matter, we are slicing with our software. We are projecting single planar images. I don't think there is anyway to alter the software to change the way we are printing. Probably the diff between $3,000.00 machine and $40,000.00 machine. And for all that tech you get to give them another $4,500.00 per year, so they don't have to tell you how it is done. Deff not going to tell me either. I think MIke can prob hang it up too.

I drilled bigger the holes of the rail in Delrin to limit the floating of the axis Y. I do not have tracks anymore Z!.
