Re: Another casting issue thread

I've been spraying most of my printed models with fixative to smooth surfaces and to act as a barrier between resin and investment. It makes a difference in smoothness. I used it on my one and my only silver in gypsum casting. The surfaces of the cast silver are very nice. But I have never cast in g...

Re: Expansion during burnout

I've had slight to moderate finning - caused by shell damage due to resin expansion - in some castings recently. My B9 models were printed in Cherry resin. This is not usually a problem with my process but it has been - some pretty nasty finning - for the past coupe of weeks. I cast platinum in Tall...

I'd buy zbrush if it worked like B9 software.

What problems, Robert? Is there a thread about the trouble you've been having casting B9 models in platinum?

Re: ASH RESIDUE

I have a ceramic tray in my kiln similar to the one in the photo above. I generally cast platinum and I top out my burnout at 1550 degrees F for 3 hours. I have a collection of pink ash in the runs of my ceramic tray just like that in the photo.

It's not just a matter temperature.

Re: Resin advice for miniatures

Robert - For some years, I used "Ridge" gray RTV from Freeman - bought from Stuller until Stuller stopped listing the Ridge (for rigid). The Ridge was higher durometer than the Freeman clear = stiffer. RioGrande sells their "Ditto" brand silicone RTV. They have listed "Ditto...

Re: Resin advice for miniatures

Paco- you have stirred my curiosity regarding the use of platinum based silicone mold materials for molding B9 resins. I have been using RTV mold materials since the early 90s'. I sold my vulcanizer at least 20 years ago because the fumes generated during the process made me ill. For some years, I'v...

Thanks Robert

I use B9 for everything since I got it running. I have not operated my mill this year.

Re: casting issues

by the way has anyone here tried casting without the can or "flask" ? Tim - I began my platinum casting experience with ringless / flaskless / canless investment (Dental process uses plastic flask formers that are removed after the investment sets). That was the way "Doc" taught...

Simple supports OK

Simple supports worked out OK.

I didn't build this file. It's printed for another bench jeweler. Not my usual geometry. Could be a little more smooth but should be acceptable.

Re: MSM Settings

You folks are making me worry a little. With the 1.7.3 software and aluminum vat, I have to run 0.500 MSM to avoid over thick parts and my parts are still a bit thick with Cherry resin. I've been pouring 30 plus 3 Sylgard with the dam in place. Starting anew with the resin vat looks like it will be ...

Re: Is the cherry resin good for casting on gold and platinum

I cast platinum from Cherry resin parts almost exclusively. I don't cast gold from B9 parts in gypsum investment - have not tried that yet. With Talladuim Galaxy 2 investment (and probably Doc's investment too), the platinum casting experience is pretty much the same as EnvisionTec wic and pic parts...

Re: Vat stress cracks and breaks??

Be very careful about using longer thumb screws for the vat.

I bought very slightly longer (1/2 inch long) thumb screws and the longer left side screw got jammed on the X arm.

Re: Question for those experienced casters.!

I used Wax Web when I was vacuum casting gold and silver. I even added radial walls of wax web between parts on a tree to enhance the vacuum pull for those parts. The Wax Web made all the difference in successful castings but it did require time and it significantly added to the smoke / stink factor...

Re: WASN'T ABLE TO GET ANYTHING TO STICK TO THE PLATE

For what it's worth - I generally rub the build table top with a few drops of alcohol on a Bear-Tex / Scotch-Brite pad after I remove the last print job and dry with a paper towel. There is usually at least a little residue left on the build table after pulling the parts.

Could be a USB issue. Is your projector plugged into the computer or is it plugged into a secondary block?

Re: Resin OOPS

Well, I just pulled the build table and the last print done in ~contaminated Cherry at 1:1 print settings is much closer to "as built" dimensions than the prints done at Cherry settings. Surfaces are looking good.

This is a mystery that I can live with.
